Gepost in Gezondheid

"Cardiovasculair disease occors in about a third of the patients and consists of coronary heart disease, cardiomyopathy with arrhythmias, left ventricular hypertrophy, decreased diastolic function and hypertension. Upper airway obstruction with sleep apnea occurs in about 60% of patients. Frank diabetes is diagnosed in 25% of patiënts".

Increased overall mortality in acromegaly, about 3-fold higher in male patiënts, has been reported due to cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disorders, malignancy and respiratory disease. Survival of these patients is reduced by an avarage of 10 years compared with non-acromegalic population. Acromegaly increases the risk of malignancy and tissue polyps. Adenomateus colonic polyps are present in up to one third of acromegalic patients and about 10% of patients develop a malignancy, most commonly colonic, gastric and ageal adenocarcinomas.
